A Lifetime of Generosity Leads to Legacy Gift

Fran and Art Kneller

Dave and Jane Carlson believed in the value of giving back to the community. Active in Rockford-area businesses and organizations, they served on numerous boards and donated to causes in the region. Along the way, Jane gained a reputation as a natural fundraiser.

Though they made the most of philanthropic opportunities in life, the Carlsons didn’t want their legacy to end there, so they established charitable remainder trusts many years before they passed away. Part of these final contributions, now entrusted to their daughter, Fran Kneller, will be used to continue Rosecrance’s life-giving work. As a result, the family will be honored in The Rosecrance Foundation’s 1916 Society, which recognizes those who support the organization through planned giving.

“I’m grateful for the example my mom and dad set,” Fran said. “Even though they were quiet about giving, they deserve credit for making this part of their legacy.”

The decision to include Rosecrance in the trust was made easy by the family’s familiarity with the organization. Dave and Jane occasionally provided support, and Fran served a decade on the Rosecrance board beginning in the mid-2000s. In addition, Fran and her husband, Art, are neighbors to the Rosecrance Griffin-Williamson Campus, which gives them added appreciation for the work.

The Knellers’ support did not end once Fran left the board. They have continued to donate and sing Rosecrance’s praises at every opportunity. Thanks to that established relationship, it was a straightforward process to finalize plans with the Foundation.

“Rosecrance is near and dear to my heart, because anybody in any family can have an issue with addiction or mental health at any moment,” Fran said. “Everybody there is invested in the mission, and knowing it is near and dear to many people makes it easy to support.”

By making these contributions, Fran hopes to pass on the spirit of generosity to the next generations, with three children and nine grandchildren watching her. In addition, she hopes her example will encourage others to plan ahead to maximize their giving opportunities now and after they pass away.

That would build the ultimate legacy.

“We have been very fortunate in our lives and find it is a joy giving to others,” Fran said. “Hopefully, by contributing to the charitable trust, we can be part of my parents’ legacy and pass that to our kids. They are generous in their own right and we’re grateful for that.”
