Ipsen Conservatory Offers Year Round Setting For Enrichment and Growth

Carla Roth with Susan J. Ipsen

Carla Roth, Rosecrance Recreational Therapist, meets with Susan J. Ipsen, lead donor of the Rosecrance Ipsen Conservatory, to share how clients benefit from the space.

The Ipsen Conservatory at the Rosecrance Griffin Williamson Campus is a state-of-the-art space for adolescents. The space showcases a beautiful view of the Rosecrance Healing Garden, but it's plenty remarkable all on its own.

With sprawling plants, mouthy parakeets and plenty of light, the conservatory is more than just a giant, windowed room. It functions as an experiential therapies hotspot for clients and offers a year round setting for enrichment and growth.

Carla Roth, Rosecrance Recreational Therapist, and several other staff members recently met with Susan J. Ipsen, longtime friend of Rosecrance and lead donor of the Conservatory project. Roth explained the importance of horticulture-based activities and showcased how clients interact with and benefit from the space.

"Horticulture improves patience, task initiation, feelings of compassion, a sense of responsibility, and mindfulness," says Carla. "If a client has escalated, needs a break from a group, or a calming place to process, they often ask to go to the Conservatory."

Funded in part by donations from friends of Rosecrance, including a lead gift from Ipsen, the Conservatory was completed in 2013. Susan also continues to provide annual support for the needs of the Conservatory.

"The generosity of our donors cannot be overstated. Susan's support is an example of how one gift can inspire others and impact thousands," says Anne Boccignone, Rosecrance Vice President of Communications and Development. "Rosecrance wouldn't be the facility it is without special spaces like the Conservatory, this resource and other experiential activities are crucial for our clients' recovery."
